Durham Cathedral, vibration tests
Dr Robert Crawford of the Institute of Sound & Vibration Research, Southampton University, leads team recording the effects of vibration from bells and organ on Cathedral structure and of small explosions detonated outside to simulate sonic booms. Commissioned by the Ministry of Technology, similar tests were carried out at Winchester, Lincoln, Canterbury, St Giles' Edinburgh and York Minster. Northern Echo photograph.
