Built c.1881 by William Putnam. After World War 1 owned by Blumer. Bought by Co-operative WholwesaleSoc for employees' social club mid-1930s. Requisitioned by the Army 1939, used as Royal Engineers area office until the 1950s. Subsequently used by Ordnance Survey and Government Car Service. Customs & Excise moved here from Victoria Road in 1965, and took over whole building on the introduction of VAT. Photographed November 1981, by Manpower CEP Scheme photographic survey of Darlington.
