Shako, 68 Light Infantry

Officer's Shako, 68th Light Infantry, 1829-1844. This 'Bell Topped' shako (hat) is made from black beaver (now very worn and cracked) with a leather top, sloping peak and edging. The shako plate (badge) is gilt with a French horn on a star with the number '68' in silver. As the 68th was a Light Infantry Regiment this shako is topped by a green (now faded) silk ball. An oil-skin cover was worn over the shako in bad weather. Between 1829 and 1844, the 68th Light Infantry served in Ireland, Scotland, Gibraltar, Jamaica and Canada. Acc No: 237/4
