Miniature, Durham Militia

Miniature Portrait, Durham Militia Officer, about 1790. This painting of an unknown officer is in watercolour on ivory. He is wearing a scarlet coatee (jacket) with white or pale buff (yellow) facings (collar and cuffs), silver lace and silver buttons with the letters 'DM' under a crown. At Raby Castle near Barnard Castle, there is a portrait of William Harry, 3rd Earl of Darlington, wearing the uniform of the Durham Militia. William Harry became Colonel of the Regiment in 1792, when his father died. The portrait at Raby bears a striking resemblance to this miniature both in looks and style of uniform. Acc No: 2841
