Sacriston Colliery, Witton Pit, winding engine

Control levers of the vertical single cylinder steam winding engine in service at Witton Pit from 1860 to 1936. This Crowther-type engine was made by Thomas Murray of Chester-le-Street. In 1936 the enginemen were three brothers, Jack, Tom and Bob Laidler. The engine was replaced by an electric "clutch-winder" drawing from the Low Main, Hutton Seam and the Bottom Level (Busty Seam) at about 600ft.
