Enfield Rifled Musket

British 1853 Pattern Enfield Rifled Musket, calibre .577". This muzzle-loading rifle is stamped '1862' and is the type of rifle that was used by the early Rifle Volunteers in County Durham. When the trigger was pulled, the hammer hit a small percussion cap, which exploded and set off the gunpowder charge to fire a conical lead bullet. Acc No: 16
