Emergency Ration, 1 DLI

Emergency Ration, 1st Battalion DLI, South Africa, 1899-1902. This tin contains 4 ounces of 'concentrated beef' and 4 ounces of 'cocoa paste'. This food could be added to hot water or eaten dry. These ration tins were issued to soldiers during the Boer War but were only to be opened in an emergency. This tin, with the remains of its paper label, belonged to Lieutenant Colonel Walter Ross, who served with both the 1st Battalion DLI and the 8th Corps of Mounted Infantry during the Boer War.
