Chocolate Box, 1 DLI

Chocolate Box, 1st Battalion DLI, South Africa, 1900. This presentation tin box still contains its original Rowntree's chocolate wrapped in silver paper and packed in straw. These tins were sent as gifts by Queen Victoria to all British troops serving in South Africa. This tin belonged to Corporal Sydney Hawkins, who served with the 1st Battalion DLI and the Mounted Infantry. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1901. Acc No: 435
