Darlington Quoit Club, established 1846, played annually for the Silver Quoit at the back of the Central Hall (Horsemarket). This photograph taken 1860 shows a number of prominent citizens, back row, from left: William Smith, George Allison jnr (son of solicitor Geo Allison), William Hardy, Thomas Swinburne snr, Charles Brady (of Backhouses Bank), T Preston (wine merchant of High Row), William Lear (ironmonger). Front: Thomas Potts (of Potts & Swinburne, tobacco manufacturers), Richard Child (tanner), John Harrison (coachbuilder), John Lear (ironmonger), Richard Graham (gardner at Peirremont or Brinkburn).
