Bandmaster Jack Woodhall of Stanhope Silver Band shows Big Charlie, 124 year-old veteran of the Big Meeting and largest drum ever to play at the Gala, which split as the band started to march to Durham from Houghton-le-Spring. Northern Echo photograph.
