Darlington, Bull Wynd, Reed's Grocers' van

John Reed had a high-class grocery shop in Blackwellgate. This picture was taken behind the old Central Hall, probably at the time of King Edward VII's Coronation in 1902. Holding the horse is Mr John Routh of 7 Beaumont Street, Reed's cartman who died in 1940. To the right are Routh's daughters Ethel, Agnes and Phyllis, who (as Mrs Phyllis Rowe) became manageress of the Theatre Royal in Northgate.
